The confusing world of garage doors can be broken down into 3  basic types:

~ Up & Over

~ Roller

~ Sectional.

Most types of door can be made electrically operated at any time. But which one is right for you?

  • Up & Over Doors - one piece doors that can be made out of Steel, GRP, ABS,       or Timber.

Pros - Steel doors tend to be the cheaper option in garage doors

Wide range of designs, choice of colours and finishes, e.g primed, plastisol, or deep textured powder coating

Canopy doors have neat fittings, no space is take up inside the garage

Retractable which slides back on tracks into the garage, useful in windy or high passing traffic (e.g back alley) areas

Cons - Retractable doors reduce space in garage

You need to leave space infront of the garage and once parked inside for the door to move through its natural line of travel

Wheelie bins! Any objects caught under the door can do serious damage to the operating mechanism

  • Roller Shutters - available single skin, non-insulated, or insulated.

Pros - You can park directly infront of them, good if space is at a premium

Wide range of colours

Few moving parts, less to go wrong

Insulated doors are stronger, and retain heat, ideal for integral garages or workshops

Incase of damage, insulated doors can be replaced by the lath, not the whole curtain, keeping costs down

Cons - Some cheap roller doors can rattle in the wind

Single skin doors can sometimes look like shop shutters, and spoil the look of the        house

Takes up headroom in garage

Not suited for garages with windows above the door

  • Sectional Doors - available single skin or insulated

Pros - Wide range of designs, finishes and colour

Insulated doors are stronger, and retain heat, ideal for integral garages or workshops

Incase of damage, insulated doors can be replaced by the panel, not the whole door, keeping costs down

You can park directly infront of them, good if space is at a premium

Cons - Tracks take up space in the garage

Not  suited for garages with windows above the door

And then there are the electric doors. But you don't need us to tell you how fantastic they are on the cold, dark, rainy, windy night, when you can pull up outside your garage, press a button, and hey presto the door opens, with you staying warm and                               dry in your cosy car!
